United invests $15M in carbon capture-sustainable fuel effort

Axios United Airlines

United Airlines is investing $15 million in the carbon capture startup Svante. The funds will be used to manufacture carbon capture filters at a commercial scale in Vancouver, Canada.

Svante’s filters capture CO2 from industrial sites or the atmosphere, which can be compressed for potential use in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) or sequestered underground. United’s Sustainable Flight Fund is a multimillion-dollar effort to support SAF startups and R&D. SAFs are seen as a short-to-medium-term way to reduce aviation emissions. United aims to go emissions-free by 2050, without using carbon offsets.
