As the coronavirus pandemic has unfolded, it has highlighted the digital divide, revealing who in society does or does not have adequate access to reliable broadband connectivity.

IT leaders in smart cities across the country have spoken out recently in favor of efforts to close the digital divide. In the past few weeks, these officials — all of whom are among StateTech’s 30 State and Local Government IT Influencers Worth a Follow in 2020 — have turned to Twitter to highlight the importance of digital inclusivity and efforts underway in their cities to address the issue. They include Detroit CIO Beth Niblock, Philadelphia CIO Mark Wheeler and Washington, D.C, CTO Lindsey Parker.
