«I want our streets to be safe, accessible, sustainable and lively places for people», Janette Sadik-Khan bluntly states at the beginning of our interview. Indeed, that is what she has been aiming for for several years in the course of her professional career.

During her tenure as Commissioner of the New York City Department of Transportation (2007-2013), Janette Sadik-Khan led an urban revolution. In six years, the Big Apple added nearly 650 kilometers of bike lanes. At the same time, the department she headed launched more than 60 plazas across the most densely populated urban area in the United States, including the historic spaces that close Broadway through Times Square.
