UNHCR. The Future of Cities Is Inclusive: How Refugees Strengthen Communities

My list

For refugees, finding safety is just the first step. Once they arrive, the practical challenges of starting over quickly become part of everyday life: finding a home, getting children into school, learning a new language or trying to find work. And beyond all that, there is the challenge of feeling at home somewhere new.

Cities play an important role in this process. Across the world, millions of refugees are building new lives in urban communities. Given the right opportunities, they can bring their skills, ideas and experiences to the places where they settle. But making this possible also means addressing the barriers that can prevent people from taking part in everyday life.

This is where UNHCR works with local authorities, community organisations, businesses and other partners. Together, we support initiatives that help refugees access housing, education and employment, while creating opportunities for people to meet, connect and build relationships within their communities.

At Smart City Expo, we want to bring attention to this often overlooked side of urban development. A city’s success is not measured by its infrastructure or technology alone. It also depends on whether people can find their place in it, participate in community life and see a future for themselves there. For refugees who have been forced to leave their homes, that opportunity can make all the difference.
